RMS, the world's leading catastrophe modeling firm, today announced the company will sponsor the award for Best Vertical Disrupter at TechCrunch Disrupt, which will be presented on Wednesday, Sept. 11 by RMS vice president of developer relations, Alex Barnett. RMS and Barnett will choose the Best Vertical Disrupter award winner from more than 300 startups in the Startup Alley area of the TechCrunch Disrupt show floor. The award prize will be a trip for two people to visit the new RMS datacenter in Iceland, which CIO Magazine recently named one of the world's 10 coolest datacenters. RMS is a partner-level sponsor of TechCrunch Disrupt and will also host a lounge on the show floor during the event.
"For the past 25 years RMS has been a vertical disruptor based in Silicon Valley. RMS has shown by example what it takes to innovate and disrupt vertical industries – in our case insurance and reinsurance," says Alex Barnett, vice president of developer relations. "The more than 300 startups showcasing at TechCrunch Disrupt embody the disrupter spirit and I am excited to learn more about these innovators as part of our process for choosing the winner of the Best Vertical Disrupter award. We are also proud to be a sponsor at TechCrunch Disrupt, which draws together the apex of technology talent and passion in the Valley."
RMS recently announced RMS(one), which is disrupting the insurance and reinsurance industry by providing a real-time exposure and risk management environment designed for companies to manage all of their risk models, exposures and analytics on a single, open, cloud-based platform.
At TechCrunch Disrupt RMS will host an exhibitor table and lounge for visitors in space number 34-35 and will provide four charging stations for devices on the event floor. The RMS lounge will feature the iOS and Android strategy video game, Plague, Inc. and free neck and shoulder massages.
RMS was founded in 1989 as a spin-out from Stanford University and today is the world’s leading authority for helping the risk industry manage its exposures to natural catastrophes, terrorism and pandemic diseases.
"Innovation remains a RMS hallmark after almost 25 years in the industry," says Barnett. "RMS created an entirely new category of analytic technology that launched the catastrophe modeling industry. Now, with RMS(one), we will usher in another new risk management paradigm. As a vertical disrupter from day one, we are honored to sponsor the 2013 Best Vertical Disrupter Award to recognize founders who are committed to challenging the status quo."
RMS recently announced the hire of Barnett, whose mission is to build a developer ecosystem around RMS' move to the cloud, RMS(one). This evolution of RMS' core business to the cloud opens up numerous career opportunities for building the next generation of the company.
RMS models and software help financial institutions and public agencies evaluate and manage catastrophe risks throughout the world, promoting resilient societies and a sustainable global economy.
