THE PEOPLE OF RMS

My Story

Background

Hans Nelsen has spent the last 15 years working with all aspects of data management, from logically modeling business domains to implementing optimal physical solutions. A confessed coffee nut who loves to try new restaurants, he makes the perfect denizen of food and coffee-obsessed San Francisco.

The elegant solution

A background in philosophy isn't typical in IT, but it's helped Hans recognize the importance of asking the right questions. "Most technology problems are about understanding assumptions more than finding the solution. Once you understand the problem, a short list of optimal solutions presents itself." While building fast, reliable systems is paramount, his passion is simplicity. "I love finding simple solutions to complex problems. An elegant solution is the simplest one that does everything you need it to do."

Big data in the cloud

For his most recent project, Hans led a team of developers creating a high-performance data warehouse in the cloud. "Building an effective data warehouse is about understanding what drives the business and finding ways to help it be more effective by facilitating better strategic and operational decisions." His team accomplished their goals, and more, on schedule. "Of course, all solutions create new problems eventually, so you’re never done. That's okay, because we like solving problems."

My Story

Background

Guy Angione held leadership roles in the defense industry, finance IT, software development, and insurance IT prior to joining RMS. As director of client development in the Bermuda office, his work with leading reinsurance clients has deepened relationships and enabled a smooth transition to the next generation risk management platform.

It's a people thing.

When you talk with Guy, it’s obvious he likes working with diverse groups and building effective teams, whether that means as a former officer in the merchant marine and Naval Reserve, coaching Little League, or working with RMS clients. “Whatever opportunity comes your way, part of the fun is developing new relationships and connecting with people. It’s why I enjoy coming to work every day. I’ve never worked with smarter or more collaborative people in my career.”

Collaborative approach

Today, Guy specializes in helping reinsurance clients meet their risk management needs and improve their businesses using RMS tools. That often means consulting others in the organization for insight and expertise. "We're in a content-rich business. No one person has the answers to all the different queries that come in. You have to rely on others. The modeling team, professional services, product support—they all help us provide a high level of service to clients."

My Story

Background

Edwina Glennie earned her MSc in natural sciences, majoring in geophysics, from Cambridge University. Upon graduation, she joined RMS as part of the risk analyst training scheme, moving into the London-based consulting team. An avid hiker and sailor, she spends weekends outdoors or on the water racing her 13-foot dingy whenever possible.

Teamwork on target

Intense deadlines, last-minute international travel, long hours, and high expectations aren’t for everyone, but Edwina admits she thrives under pressure. When RMS clients needed an urgent upgrade of an important data quality tool, she helped lead a software design and development team that spanned California to Delhi. "Everyone was extremely enthusiastic and hardworking. We were absolutely determined to hit this deadline with a very ambitious scope. In those crunch times, you really see people’s strengths."

Helping clients succeed

A student of the natural sciences, Edwina assumed she would work in physics. At RMS, her science background proved valuable, but what intrigued her was the intensive teamwork and client interaction. "I like seeing how clients use our tools, discovering their pain points, and helping them move forward. The next generation platform, while challenging during the initial integration, is going to mean enormous improvements. I’m working very closely with clients, even onsite with their teams, to help make it happen."

My Story

Background

Asheesh Garg brings 18 years of experience in process and quality control, IT, and client services to his role at RMS, where he leads an operations team of 150 analysts in Noida, India. A mechanical engineer, he's helped deliver car components, cathode ray tubes, and IT services to clients around the globe.

Continuous improvement

"When a new client comes to RMS, our job is to understand their requirements, find the right solution, and deliver on time," explains Asheesh, who works directly with clients to ensure they are getting the most value for their investment. "No matter how efficient you are, you have to continuously think about process and productivity improvement. New applications mean more work, so you have to think about automation. Improvement must advance each year, for RMS and our clients."

Helping build careers

As a manager, Asheesh’s style is accessible. "You can reach me any time. I want to discuss your career aspirations and help you keep getting opportunities to perform and gain knowledge." That freedom to keep learning, work independently, take responsibility, and stay challenged is what has kept key members of his team on board for six years and counting. "We’re a knowledge company. We invest in R&D and new products, so we never stop learning."

My Story

Background

Carlos Cabrera studied physics and hydraulic engineering at Stanford before earning his master's in structural engineering. His resume includes modeling creek flows, creating earthquake sensor networks, and designing buildings. An accomplished photographer, percussionist, and Latin jazz musician, he tours with the indie rock band Pomplamoose.

Focus on Latin America

Always fascinated by Latin America, Carlos joined RMS to conduct field research for a new Latin America earthquake model, working in more than a dozen countries during his first year. Recently, he developed new hurricane vulnerability models for Central America and the Caribbean. His work in the region has continued through research trips to earthquake-ravaged areas of Chile and Haiti, and through the South America Capital Cities project, an RMS humanitarian endeavor assessing seismic risk and mitigation.

Passion for fieldwork

Engineering know-how, a global perspective, and a knack for making connections have helped Carlos initiate post-disaster reconnaissance projects around the world, from validating satellite-image damage reports in Haiti to researching post-tsunami business interruption in Japan. "I'm always putting together project proposals. I guess you could say I'm good at improvising." Whether in West Sumatra, Chile, or India, he's found ways for on-the-ground research to improve our understanding of natural catastrophes and their impacts.
