Kocaeli, Turkey and Chi-Chi, Taiwan Earthquake
Event Reports
RMS released event reports covering two catastrophic earthquakes in
1999: the August 17 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey and the September 21
earthquake in Chi-Chi, Taiwan. These reports include RMS’ findings from
its reconnaissance surveys immediately following the events, and cover
the following topics:
Background of the affected regions
Geologic effects
Nature and causes of structural damages
Business interruption losses
Insured and economic loss estimates
Future issues for recovery and reconstruction
The reports also offer insights into how the earthquakes have shaped the
emerging insurance markets in Turkey and Taiwan, where the majority of
earthquake insurance covers high-valued, industrial and commercial
risks.
