Windstorms Lothar and Martin Event Report

In December of 1999, Windstorms Lothar and Martin passed over France,
Switzerland, and Germany, causing the largest insured catastrophe loss
in Europe’s history. On December 28, just days after the storms passed,
RMS was first to issue loss estimates and parameters for modeling the
storm. Our initial estimate of over €6 billion was borne out by actual
claims, currently estimated at €7.7 billion across Europe.
The many lessons to be learned from this catastrophe are documented in
the event report. The report provides a synthesis of overall insured and
economic damages from the storms, an analysis of different categories of
loss, and a commentary on the consequences for insurance and reinsurance
markets.
The report is in both French and English. |
