Mini-Seminar on Confined Masonry
September 17, 2009 Mary-Lou Zoback, vice
president, earthquake risk applications, was a
keynote speaker at the Mini-Seminar on Confined Masonry
co-sponsored by Earthquake Engineering Risk Institute (EERI) and
the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California on
Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the office of Arup in San
Franscisco, California. Confined masonry uses existing
technologies in new, innovative ways. Correctly built, confined
masonry buildings perform very well in earthquakes. In an effort
to promote this technology more widely, particularly in
countries where it is not currently used, a group of
international volunteers has formed the Confined Masonry
Network. This project is an outgrowth of EERI and IAEE’s World
Housing Encyclopedia (WHE) and is currently being supported by
Risk Management Solutions.
